Camera Trapping - Videography

The Apple TV Project

In 2018, an email from a colleague I hadn’t heard from in 40 years led me to a major project: producing video footage of Southern Californian mountain lions. This work was for the Apple TV+ production “Earth at Night In Color,” which helped Apple launch its streaming platform with groundbreaking content.

Technical Execution

To capture this footage, I applied my deep expertise in Cognisys gear and nocturnal mammal camera trapping. My experience in creating still images and identifying high-action locations allowed our team to effectively utilize:

  • Specialized Equipment: We exploited low-light sensitive Sony 4K video cameras.
  • Innovation: We successfully captured color nocturnal footage of an urban apex predator.
  • Impact: At the time of production, these results were considered truly groundbreaking.

Expansion & Industry Recognition

The success of the Apple TV+ project paved the way for several high-profile collaborations, including:

  • Major Networks: Project for Disney/National Geographic.
  • Current Work: Ongoing production with RANfilm.

Conservation & Community Impact

Beyond commercial productions, my work has played a vital role in local conservation efforts:

The Annenberg Wildlife Crossing: My footage and imagery were used to raise awareness and funds for what has become the largest wildlife crossing in the world, located north of Los Angeles. One of my images was featured on six billboards across downtown Los Angeles.

P22 – Hollywood’s Mountain Lion: I donated imagery of the famous mountain lion, P22, to support these efforts. One of my images was featured on six billboards across downtown Los Angeles.

Today, I continue to provide a mix of still and video collateral of the local wildlife for several conservation agencies, a pursuit I find incredibly rewarding.
