Hummingbirds on White

The Art of the High-Key Portrait:

How I Achieve the Pure White Background

Just as black is the absence of light, a pure white background is the result of a deliberate “overpowering” of it. By aiming dedicated high-speed flashes at a background surface—effectively “blowing it out”—I can render any setting into a clean, clinical void.

The challenge lies in precision: the background flashes must be carefully isolated so they do not spill onto the birds. This ensures that while the background is pushed into total overexposure, the hummingbird remains perfectly defined by its own dedicated light source. As with all my work, this high-key effect is achieved entirely in-camera, using light and physics rather than post-processing.
