Beyond the Mask While my work with high-speed sensors dissects the physical world, Essence Portraiture is where I explore the human narrative. I approach a portrait session with the same patience and observational focus I use to camera-trap a mountain lion or freeze a hummingbird in flight. My interest isn’t in the “manufactured” image or the staged pose; I am looking for the unscripted moment when the mask drops and the true individual arrives.
I provide a judgment-free environment where the technical variables—light, shadow, and timing—are mastered so completely that they become invisible, leaving only the person. This is a deliberate, slow-form process designed to reveal the “essence” of a subject. Whether I am capturing a traditional portrait or the abstract geometry of the human form, my goal is to document the profound beauty of being real, stripping away the artifice to find the truth that exists when we finally stop performing for the lens.
